About local elections
Our local elections use the first-past-the-post (FPTP) electoral system.
Epping Forest District Council votes by thirds. This means a third of councillors (18 out of 54) are elected each year over a 4-year cycle. The fourth year is known as a fallow year and is when the county council elections take place.

Parish and town councils
Parish and town councillors are elected to represent their parish or town council for 4 years.
The requirement to send poll cards does not apply to parish and town council elections. The parish or town can however, request that they are issued. Currently parish and town council elections are held in halves (half in 2023 and 2027) alongside district elections. Therefore, poll cards are issued. It may be the case that the parish or town council choose not issue poll cards for by-elections. For further information please see the Electoral Commissions website.
