National Windrush Day, 22 June 2023, will mark the 75th anniversary of the arrival of over 1,000 passengers of the Empire Windrush to the UK.
Windrush generation
We mark this day to remember and celebrate the courage of the pioneers who immigrated to the United Kingdom and recognise the lasting impact the Windrush generation and their descendants have made on British culture and society.
The Windrush generation refers to the thousands of people who migrated to the UK from the Caribbean between 1948 and 1971 in response to a call for workers to help rebuild Britain after World War II. Many individuals faced discrimination and hardship upon their arrival, persevering they made significant contributions to British society in healthcare, education and the arts.
