Backdated benefits
We usually pay Housing Benefit and Council Tax support from the Monday after we get your claim but in some circumstances we can pay from an earlier date.
Backdated benefit is paid for a period prior to the date that an application form is received. For working age claimants you can apply for backdating for up to 1 month for Housing Benefit or for up to 3 months for local Council Tax support from the date we received the request. Providing you show continuous good cause as to why you did not claim from an earlier date.
How to apply
When claiming for local Council Tax support and Housing Benefit there is a section within each application form to request a backdated payment.
You must make your request in writing, clearly stating the reasons you want your claim to be backdated.
