- An extra bathroom or kitchen
- Extra space to use a wheelchair

Unoccupied exemption class D
An unoccupied property where the person who would normally pay the Council Tax is in prison, can be made exempt for Council Tax. This exemption doesn’t apply if the sentence being served is due to non-payment of Council Tax or a fine.

Discretionary discount

Section 13A (1c) of the Local Government Finance Act 1992 allows local authorities to, in exceptional circumstances, reduce the Council Tax liability for a chargepayer. Statutory exemptions and discounts must first have been exhausted.
In certain cases discretionary discounts can offer help by reducing Council Tax liability to people who find themselves in extreme financial difficulty.

An unoccupied property where the last occupier who paid the Council Tax is now a patient living in a hospital, nursing home or care home. If they have no intention of moving back to the property, it can be made exempt for Council Tax.

Unoccupied exemption class F
An unoccupied property where the person who paid the Council Tax has passed away. There must be no joint owners or joint tenants and the property must have remained unoccupied since the person died.
The exemption can be applied while waiting for probate or letters of administration to be granted and for up to 6 months after the grant. (more…)

Care worker discount

Carers may be able to claim a discount if you share your home with someone who is entitled to certain allowances or disablement pension and you care for them for more than 35 hours a week. We cannot award a discount to someone who cares for their husband, wife, partner or son or daughter who is under 18.
