Independent living

Independent living is accommodation for people who are over 60. It is suitable for those who are capable of living on their own but feel more secure with the support of an independent living officer and emergency alarm system.

For added peace of mind, our independent living schemes benefit from a door entry system and CCTV at the main entrance to the building.

There are also communal facilities, such as a laundry room, a guest room for visiting friends and relatives, plus a communal lounge and kitchen.

Apply for independent living

To apply for independent living, you will need to join the our housing register on the HomeOption website.

We have many independent living accommodation schemes, with 1-bedroom flats being the most common type of property.

We have independent living schemes in:

  • Buckhurst Hill
  • Epping
  • Loughton
  • Nazeing
  • North Weald
  • Ongar
  • Waltham Abbey

Read our guide Welcome to independent living booklet which explains what to expect from this accommodation and the services on offer for people living in these properties.

What does it cost?

Rents are similar to normal council rents. A support charge is included, which is mainly for the independent living officer and the emergency alarm service.
