Dedicated Police resources including regular patrols at Chigwell Underground Station, a non-emergency phone number and Police surgeries at the Parish Council Offices are among a series of measures announced through the Epping Forest Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership (CDRP). The steps are being taken partly in response to problems associated with large numbers of young people meeting around the area of the station, Brook Parade and Chigwell Station Green.

We have agreed a range of measures with Essex Police and Chigwell Parish Council through the Partnership. They will target particular issues affecting Chigwell at the moment, said Councillor Mrs Syd Stavrou, Community Wellbeing Portfolio Holder for Epping Forest District Council. We expect to see changes coming on stream very soon.

Chigwell Parish Council is to monitor CCTV cameras for the area and provide accommodation for the Police surgeries at its offices in Hainault Road. It will also review and consider the temporary removal of public benches. The installation of a Youth Shelter on Chigwell Station Green has also been postponed. Epping Forest District Council`s new CDRP Co-ordinator Paul Gardener and Essex Police will also liaise with local schools and talk to pupils about anti-social behaviour.

Essex Police is to provide a dedicated sergeant and nominated police officers with allocated patrol times to Chigwell. The dedicated non-emergency phone number will be distributed to shopkeepers in Brook Parade and other outlets with facilities to leave messages and a promise that all calls will be followed up by Essex Police within 24 hours.

District Commander Jon Hill of Essex Police said: I would like to thank all of the agencies involved through the Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership for the help and co-operation we have received in Chigwell. The Parish Council and shopkeepers in particular are our eyes and ears. It is vital that we have a close working relationship and support each other as much as possible.

He added: I have made firm commitments to resource the policing needs of Chigwell and raise the profile of the Police locally. These are substantial measures and I expect to see an improvement in the environment around the shops, green and station very quickly.
