Single person’s discount review

We are carrying out a full review of our Council Tax single person discounts, increasing our efforts to identify fraudulent behaviour.

In the Epping Forest district, there are currently around 18,000 Council Tax payers that are receiving a 25% single person discount. Using intelligent data matching, we are comparing records to check the validity of the discounts awarded.

Residents found to be receiving a discount they are not entitled to will have the discount stopped and backdated as far as the evidence supports. We can impose a civil penalty or in serious cases, prosecute those found to be cheating the system.
